Butterfly Themed Ten Frame Addition Cards
One bug theme I get asked more about than anything is butterflies. And this spring we are having some fun with butterflies.
I know that kids work from counting with ten frames to adding in ten frames. And these free Butterfly Ten Frame Addition Cards are a fun way to work on addition.
A great bug theme while learning addition.
This is a great addition to the bug printables on the site!
Addition is one of the first math that kids work on beyond numbers. And it is great to do it in something they might have already used. We do a lot of numbers in ten frames. These are great for learning in kindergarten and review for first grade.
These cards work on adding up to 10 in a ten frame. The cards are made with different learning levels in mind. You can start with part of an equation done and the second set of cards has no part of the ten frame filled in.
I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating
these cards to help last longer.

You also have a recording worksheet you can use to fill in the answers. It has space for all 12 cards.

Ways to use these butterfly addition ten frame cards
I want to show you a few ways to use these cards. There is not just one way that works perfectly to use them. We always change up how we use these.
First I’m going to show where you fill in all of the addition equations.
One of the ways that they are used most often is with the unifix cubes. They are great for fitting in the squares. Plus loads of colors to pick from. You build one part of the equation in one color and the second part of the equation in another color.

You can also use mini erasers on these. We get a lot of our erasers at Target but you can find some on Amazon. You can see how we used two different erasers to fill in the ten frame equation.

You can see a few ways we used the second set of cards. The first thing to know is any of the hands-on items above can be used for the second part of the equation as well.
One way is to fill out the second part of the equations with clear counters. They are great for fine motor work while building the equation.

If you have your cards laminated you can have kids just use dry erase markers
right on the cards. They can fill in the equation and write the answer.

Another fun way to use these cards is with dot marker. If you don’t intend to reuse the pages then print just a single page and have kids dot the equations.

Now there is a recording sheet with these cards. You can fill out the cards and then do the answers on the worksheet. Or you can use the cards as task cards and fill out the work on the worksheet.
I give them fine line markers or crayons
to fill out the equations. It is great way to see how they are doing with ten frame addition.
