What is a Sensory Bin?
A sensory bin is typically a plastic tub or container filled with carefully selected materials and objects to stimulate the senses of children in preschool.
Sensory bins might have rice, water beads, corn, beans, or other types filled with small items.

As always make sure to watch kids while they are playing in a sensory bin.
How We Used the Button Sensory Bin
You will see a few ways we played in the button sensory bin. And remember that if all you so is play in the sensory bin that is okay!
Play in the Button Sensory Bin
Sensory play is always important and it should be play. It can be as simple are running hands through the buttons and picking up buttons from the bin. And let kids have fun free sensory play time. They need it.

Use Sensory Scoops in the Button Sensory Bin
We used sensory scoops in our sensory bin. These are great for scooping pouring and even sorting. And you can see how much fun they add. You could also add small cups as well.
They add an extra fun for sensory play. Plus these scoops work in different types of sensory bins.

Explore Colors of Buttons in the Button Sensory Bin
Buttons are a great way to explore colors. You can have kids dig through all the colors in the sensory bin and give one color.
We did a search for the color blue and put them in one of the sensory scoops. Then we search for more colors after that. Kids can pick out individual buttons and tell you the color. It is great for fine motor to pick out the different buttons

Explore the Size of Buttons in the Button Sensory Bin
The sensory bin has different size of buttons. And this is great to explore the different in size. We did a search for small buttons and then large buttons. You can compare how large some buttons are compared to others.
We put out buttons in the sensory scoop and filled up the scoop with each size. You can talk about how you need less large buttons compared to smaller buttons.

And remember to just Play in the Button Sensory Bin
Remember that this is a sensory bin and if all you do is play that is okay. Sensory bins should be full of fun. Just make sure that you are using the sensory bin that is best for you kids!

This is brilliant – and I’m not just saying that because I have possibly the largest button collection in North America stashed in my sewing boxes! Pinning right now – thanks for sharing!
You are welcome. 🙂
My son made a shaker out of our corn sensory bin this week! He said he made it for me, though. That’s my sweet little guy! I really like all the colorful buttons. When I’ve done activities with buttons they have all been brown, black or clear (they came with the clothes).
It is really easy to find colorful buttons! I found them at various places AC Moore, Michael’s and Walmart.
Oh this looks like so much fun!! I don’t own any buttons though 🙁 I’ll have to buy some eventually! xx
It was fun for them and it is easy to find color button! I found them at various craft places: AC Moore, Michael’s and Walmart.
