What are CVC words?
CVC words are words that have a consonant vowel consonant pattern. They have easy to sound out consonants with a short vowel sound in the middle. They don’t have any tricky blends or digraphs for kids to work around.
They are considered simple words that can be used with early readers to help sound out and decode words.
They have short vowel sounds that make sounding out words easy.
You are going to find words like cat. Kids can sound out the letters C A & T. And then blend the sounds together to make the word.
Some CVC words that kids learn are bug, map, sat, dog, pot, pan, etc.
CVC Word Blending Card Printables
The CVC word blending cards work on sounding out each letter and then blending the letters together to make a word. There are 82 cards to use with kids.
They work on sounding and blending on cards. Each set of CVC cards has a the letters for the CVC, picture of the CVC word and then CVC word. You have 82 short vowel words with short a words, short e words, short i words, short o words and short u words.
You set different sets of endings for the CVC words. You have the following CVC endings: -ad, -ab, -ag, – am, -an, -ap, -ar, -at, ax, -eb, -ed, -eg, -em, -en, -et, -ib, -id, -ig, -im, -in, -ip, -it, -ix, -ob, -od, -og, -om, -op, -ot, -ox, -ub, -ud, -ug, -um, -un, -up, -ut, -ux.
You can see below that you have the word spread out for each letter to sound out and then the picture and the word for kids to read after the picture. A fun set of cards for kids to point to the letters say the letter sound and then work on saying the CVC word at the end of the strip.
These are great for kids in kindergarten (ages 5 to 6) and first grade (ages 6 to 7).

Ways to Use the CVC Word Blending Card Printable
Preparing the CVC Word Blend Cards
A great way to prepare the CVC word blend cards is to print on cardstock and laminate the cards. You can also punch out the circle in the top left corner for using on rings.
You can do all the cards or just a few cards at a time.
Store the CVC Cards on a Ring
You can store all the CVC blending cards on a ring or just the set you are using. You can see what we have the CVC short u words below. Kids can work on the words they need. They can go through each of the cards and work on sounding out the letters and then saying the words.
Using the CVC Blending Cards in Learning Centers
We are using the word hut for the example below. You will see how we use the cards.
You are going to start by pointing to the first letter on the left side. You point at the dot and say the letter sound. You will do this for each of the letters.
Then you point to the word at the end and say the word.
You can also use playoudgh on the circles and have kids squish the circles at they sound out each of the letters and say the word. A simple change that adds a sensory part to learning.
Do CVC Blend Cards by Word Family
You can work on the CVC blending cards by using only one set of word family. This keeps the vowel and the ending sound the same.
They can then work the beginning sounds on each card and blending the word. A fun idea for kids just getting started.
Changing the Vowel Sound in the Words
A fun activity for kids who are doing great with learning CVC words. You can use the cards that has the same beginning and ending sound, but different vowels.
You can have kids go through each of the cards and work on the vowel sounds on each card. You can see we used the beginning sound of h and ending sound of t below.
All of these cards are great for working on sounding on CVC words with kids. They will enjoy learning with these simple cards.
