What are short vowel words?
A short vowel word is any word that doesn’t allow the vowel within it to generate that vowel’s long vowel sound.
The short vowel makes it easy for kids to start learning. Short vowel words like cat. Kids can sound out the letters C A & T. And then blend the sounds together to make the word.
This set works on CVC short vowel words.
Some CVC words that short vowels are bug, map, sat, dog, pot, pan, etc.

Ways to Use the Ice Cream CVC Short Vowel Matching Printable
You are going to see a few ways to set up and use the ice cream cone short vowel matching printable. Remember you can work on what works best for you!
Review the short vowel Words
If this is the first time you are working on this activity or the child you are working with is just starting on short vowel words. You go through the pictures and say the words for each picture.
After you say the words you can ask what short vowel sound they heard.
Set Up Ice Cream CVC Short Vowel Center
You can set up a simple CVC short vowel sorting activity. You can line up the cones and give them a stack of the ice cream scoops to sort. You can give them one scoop for each cone for beginners. Or you could switch it up and give them two or more for kids that are reviewing short vowel words.
If you plan on using this short vowel sorting activity a lot it is recommended that you print it on cardstock and laminate it. That way it will hold up longer.
Matching the Ice Cream CVC Short Vowel Cards
You can see how simple matching just one short vowel picture for each vowel is. You can pick the words that work best for the child that you are working with.
You can have kids point to the pictures and say the short vowel words after they have done the matching.
And you can see how fun matching all the short vowel pictures is. Just remember that you use what works best for you.
Matching game with just the Scoops
You can also have them do a matching game with just the scoops. You can give them two pictures for each short vowel. Then have them match the pairs of short vowels that go together.

One way to keep all the CVC short vowel printables together is to put them on rings“>rings. This makes is easy to store and keep togegher without losing parts of the short vowel printable.
You want to put one of each of the short vowel pictures on each of the rings.
Our favorite hole punch works great for this. It can do three laminated cardstock at a time and not make a mess of the paper. Plus has guides for lining up where you want to punch.
