What is a blend?
A blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but the letters in blends all make a separate sound.
Bl would be an example of the consonant blend. So, the word blender has a blend of bl.
You sound out b and l sounds in the word.
Beginning blend examples are: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr.

Preparing the Blend Sorting Cards
You are going to want to print and prepare the cards in advance. You are going to want to print the cards on cardstock. This helps the blends cards last longer.
If you are going to use the blend sorting cards a lot you might want to laminate them.
Setting up a Blend Sorting Center
You can see below a simple set up for the sorting center. You have the blend cards with the letters and then matching ponds with the correct pictures.
Remember the matches for letters and pictures are above if you need them.
Sorting the Blend Cards
You have a nice amount of space on the pond cards to place the blend cards.
You can see we have sorted the bl and cl matches below.
You could also do this matching in a pocket chart. Place the pond cards in the pocket chart and kids match the blends in the pockets.
Sorting One Type of Blend
You might be working on only one type of blend. So if you are working on l blends s blends, or r blends. You can pull out just those blends to sort.
You can have kids tell you the picture on the pond and then find and match the blend letters.
