So what is pre-writing?
I remember the first time I heard the word pre-writing in school. My first thought was writing a paper or starting a paper.
But for young kids, pre-writing is the skill to build to work up to writing letters and other types of writing. It also teaches the direction that we read.
You can start a lot of those skills with fine motor activities with playdough and other small motor movements. But a lot of those skills are working up to prewriting with lines. Then working on more fine motor skills that help to do better with writing and reading later in life.
You start out with thick prewriting lines and work to thinner prewriting lines. Then to prewriting patterns that work into writing letters.

There are two lines styles that you can pick from. This is to help meet the needs of the kids at different prewriting levels.
Thse prewriting lines are great for kids in preschool (ages 3 to 4), prek (ages 4 to 5), and kindergarten (ages 5 to 6).
St. Patrick’s Day Roll & Trace Prewriting Thin Dashed Line
The first style of line is a thin line. You can see that it is a small black dashed line they can follow to the pot of gold. This gives them a great start and stop with the leprechaun and the pot of gold.
These prewriting lines are great for older kids in prek and extra practice for kindergarten.

St. Patrick’s Day Roll & Trace Prewriting Thick Line
The second type of line in a thicker dashed gray line. This is great for those that are not as good at the smaller lines. They have a wider area to trace the lines.

How we used the St. Patrick’s Day Roll & Trace Prewriting Printable
You can see how we use the St Patrick’s Day pre-writing printable with kids.
Setting up a Prewriting Center
You will need a six-sided dice for this activity. If you don’t have one check out our number writing practice dice.
You can see how I set it up. I give them something to trace with and the dice. I love using markers or crayons so the line comes out colored. I some times color the dice to make the items I give them. This time we used colored pencils.

Roll & Trace the Prewriting Lines
Every time they roll the dice they trace the matching line. You roll until you have traced all the lines. You can see they rolled a 3 and trace the matching line.
We also traced the lines with the same color we colored the die.

Use Hands-On Items on the Prewriting Lines
Don’t forget you can use other items on the lines as well. We have often use hands-on items on the lines. We use green pony beads this time to make our lines. You can fill in the whole line or you could just have them put a bead on each dash line

Reuse the Roll & Trace the Prewriting Lines
If you want to use these pages over and over. Be sure to laminate the page or put it in a sheet protector so kids can trace the lines over and over with dry erase markers.
You might even change it up so that if they roll a line they have already traced. They use a q-tip to erase the line.
Two fine motor activities at one time. You get tracing and then cleaning the line.

Using Playdough on the Prewriting Lines
You could also have them use playdough on the prewriting lines after you have put the page in a sheet protector. They roll the dice and then line the prewriting line with playdough.
