A torn paper craft is a craft where kids tear off pieces of paper to make the craft. This can also be call ripped paper art.

You can use construction paper, scrapbook paper, or any type of paper to make the torn paper crafts. And having different colors of paper is fun!

The torn paper ant hill with fingerprint ants is a super fun craft you can make with kids. You have fun with fine motor paper tearing and gluing.

The ant hill makes a fun spring craft for kids to make. It is great for a fun ant or bug craft as well.

You can make this with kids in prek (ages 4 to 5), kindergarten (ages 5 to 6) and first grade (ages 6 to 7). You can see ideas for older kids below as well.

How to make the Ant Hill Craft

You are going to see all the steps we used to make the torn paper ant hill below.

Step 1: Tear Up the Yellow Construction Paper

The first thing you do is tear up the brown or yellow construction paper. We used a light yellow that we had. This is great for building fine motor skills. As hey tear the paper.

It does not matter the size of the pieces that kids tear off.

Step 2: Glue on the Yellow paper to the Blue Paper

We glue the torn paper on the blue construction paper to build or ant hill. Kids can decide how their ant hill is going to look. You don’t have to stick to just one size of ant hill.

Let them be creative with ant hill.

Step 3: Make the Grass at the Bottom of the Ant Hill

Then we tore the green construction paper to make some grass at the bottom of the ant and paper. We kept on side straight to have it line up nicely with the paper.

But you don’t have to have it that way. They can just tear the paper and glue it on the bottom as well.

Step 4: Stamp Fingerprints to Make the Ant Bodies

The next set was building our ants. We use the red ink and made three fingerprints together to build the body. You can talk to kids about how ants look as well.

You can use the ants from the ant sensory bin to show them an example or how ants look.

Step 5: Draw Antennas, Legs & Eyes on the Ant Bodies

The final thing we did was draw on the eyes, legs, and antenna of the ants. We made sure to draw all the legs on the middle thorax. We used fine line markers for this.

It is fun to see how creative they are with their legs and eyes for the ants.

Fun Writing Idea for Older Kids

If you want to have some fun with older kids, have them make the craft above on the writing paper with drawing area and then write about their ant hill! Or Make the craft above and then use the horizontal writing paper to write about their ant hill and staple them together.

A fun way to do this craft with older kids and work on writing at the same time.
