Watercolor Moon: Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting For Kids
We are very excited about the Lunar Eclipse that is coming up! In just a few short days it will be here. Space is always a favorite topic for us. We love it.
And it is great to see things happen and not just talk about them. Today I have a very simple watercolor Lunar Eclipse Moon painting. It is a fun way to see how the moon changes during an eclipse.

The Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting is a great addition to the lunar eclipse printables and moon printables on the site.
What Is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. There are three types of lunar eclipse: total lunar eclipse, partial lunar eclipse, and penumbral lunar eclipse.
FUN FACT: A lunar eclipse can only occur when there’s a full moon! Yup, that is right, so only on the full moon!
Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting
We have made moon projects before. We made washi tape moons. It is great if you are looking for other moon projects to do. Plus we have done other similar space projects and had a blast making them.
We are using watercolors, watercolor paper and black glitter paper to make the lunar eclipse watercolor painting.
Lunar Eclipse Books to Read with the Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting
I love the book The Moon Book. It tells you so much about the moon. I love that it cover phases of the moon, lunar eclipse and even the moons part in a solar eclipse. We have a copy and love to use it often.
My girls do remember the last lunar eclipse that we watched in 2015 and 2019. It was fun to see moon change. Here is one of the few pictures we took. We had so much fun looking we never thought about pictures during most of it. You can see a video of that one here.

What you need for the Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting

How We Made Our Lunar Eclipse Watercolor Painting
You will see all the steps we used to make this lunar eclipse watercolor painting.
Step 1: Check out Different Red & Orange Colors
We started off by looking at different colors of reds and oranges we wanted to use on the lunar eclipse moon. We used some of the sides of our paper to test them.

Step 2: Paint Light Red to Dark Orange
Then we had our colors picked out and painted from dark red to a lighter red or dark orange. The idea was to have a very red looking moon.

Step 3: Paint Dark Areas on the Moon
We added some darker areas with black on the moon to show the shadows and craters we see on the moon.

Step 4: Paint Stairs on the Black
Then we put some stars on the black glitter cardstock. We used a white oil pastel crayon for this.

Step 5: Cut Out the Moon
While we were doing the stars on the black paper the watercolor moon was drying. After it was dry we cut out the moon to put it on the background.

Step 6: Glue the Moon the Black Paper
Then we glued the moon on the black paper. If your moon starts to curl off the paper you can place something on top of it to prevent that.
