Watercolor Rainbow Process Art

There are always themes we do for spring and that is rainbows! I think the one sign of spring for me has always been rainbows.

I love to look for them everywhere! This past summer we saw a wonderful double rainbow while we drove cross country. It was amazing to see how wonderful they look in the sky.

This is a fun watercolor rainbow that has the watercolor spread into the rainbow with water. A fun way to paint with oil pastels lines between the colors.

Book to read with the Watercolor Rainbow Process Art

We always have fun reading books with our art projects. Yup, ever now that they are old, we still pick a book. It might be that we all take turns reading now. It makes the art time loads of fun.

One book we love is the There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover and the rainbow at the end of the book. These books are a favorite of ours.

How we did the Watercolor Rainbow Painting

You will see the steps we did to make the watercolor rainbow painting.

Step 1: Drew the Lines of the Rainbow

First, we drew the rainbows in pencil. This made sure we had our colors and where we wanted to put them on the page. Plus you can always redraw your lines with a pencil first.

Step 2: Trace the Lines of the Rainbow

Next, we colored each of the lines with one color from the rainbow. We used oil pastels for the colors. This helped the colors not to blend into each other as much. Plus helped us keep trace of what color we were painting. For the red we did two red lines for the top.

Step 3: Paint the Water on the Rainbow

We started in on the watercolor painting. We did this similar to how we did our heart painting. We filled the whole arch of the rainbow with water first. We always keep one brush and bowl just with water for these paintings

Step 4: Paint the Colors of the Rainbow

Then we start painting. Each time we do this we get loads of paint on the brush and dip it into the water. The effects as it spreads are really neat to see. One drop of color spreads really fast through the water. This is fun to see how to works. There are many wants to do this painting and makes each painting unique to the person who made it.

If your paper curls up some and it might put something on it to hold it flat. We used some pet counters we had close by. You can use just about anything.
