Kids will enjoy gluing on the yarn and making the sky for the moon. Plus, it is a great way to talk about the moon and the color with kids!
This is a great space theme for kids as well.

The Yarn Moon Craft is an excellent addition to the moon crafts and space crafts on the site.
Yarn Moon Craft
The yarn moon craft is made with gray yarn and black yarn to make the moon. We used a black background with glitter and a white paint marker.
This is a fun sensory craft for kids to do. You can do this with preschool (ages 3 to 4), prek (ages 4 to 5), kindergarten (ages 5 to 6) or even with older kids.
It is great for any moon theme you might be doing.
Moon Books You Can Read With the Yarn Moon Craft
For our yarn Moon craft, we read The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons. We love her information books.
What We Used to Make the Yarn Moon Craft
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.

We cut the yarn in small 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces. This was a great size for the craft. You can do longer pieces if you want. it all depends on the age of the kids the size of the yarn.

How we made the Yarn Moon Craft
You will see all the steps that we did to make the yarn moon craft.
Step 1: Put Glue on the Paper Plate
You are going to start by putting glue on the paper plate. You want to have the round side up for this moon craft. You can start with just a little glue at a time on the plate.

Step 2: Place Yarn on the Glue
Then you are going to start playing the small pieces of the gray yarn on the glue. We start with gray since most of the moon is gray.

Then once the gray is on then add a little black to the moon. You can see how the black stands out.

Step 3: Repeat Step 1 and 2 Until the Plate is Covered
You are going to repeat step 1 and 2 until the paper plate is covered. We did this is stages because we got less glue on our hands. But a younger age might be better to put all the glue on first.
Do what is best for the kids you are doing this craft with.

Step 4: Press the Yarn onto the Glue
As you go you can press the yarn onto the plate. You want to put one hand under the plate and press the top where the hand is. If you do this with younger kids it is okay is the squish the paper plate flat a bit.
You can also tip the plate up and see what yarn falls off as well. we just picked up the yarn and used it on the other parts of the paper plate.

Step 5: Dot the Stars in the Black Background
we put our yarn moon aside and made the background for the moon. We used black glitter paper and a white paint marker to do the stars in the sky. You can make big or small dots with the paint marker.
And you are just going around the outside of the cardstock sine the middle will be filled with the moon.

I have seen star done with paint and flicking the paint on the paper. I don’t like this as much because it get paint all over. But if you want you can do that.
Step 6: Put Glue on the Edge of the Paper Plate
next we grabbed the paper plate and turned it over to the other side. We placed the glue on the edge of the plate. We made sure it was a thick line of glue all the way around.

Step 7: Place the Moon the Black Star Background
Finally you are going to place the moon on the background. They will want to try for the center. But if it is not perfectly in the center that is okay.
